We would like to share information about a potential wellness opportunity that is designed to positively impact the health and well-being of our Northville students. We are seeking input on opening a school-based health center in our district.
Background Information
A School-Based Health Center (SBHC) is an initiative aimed at providing convenient and accessible healthcare services to our students through Michigan Medicine. This center would be staffed with highly-qualified healthcare professionals, including a full-time nurse practitioner, full-time clinical social worker, a dietician, and a medical doctor who will have scheduled times to address both routine healthcare needs and more specific health concerns. In addition, students would have access to dental and vision services.
Here are some key points about the Michigan Medicine School-Based Health Center:
- Comprehensive Care: The center will offer a range of healthcare services, including preventive care, immunizations, basic medical exams, sports physicals and treatment for minor illnesses and injuries. This is NOT meant to replace a primary care provider. Additionally, the SBHC will provide behavioral health services, counseling, and support for emotional well-being.
- Convenience: The SBHC will be conveniently located in a building on our school campus, making it easy for students to access healthcare services. This can be particularly beneficial for parents who may find it challenging to take time off work for medical appointments.
- Confidentiality: Michigan Medicine prioritizes the privacy and confidentiality of each student and strictly adheres to all requirements of HIPAA and consent laws. All medical information will be kept confidential, and only Michigan Medicine personnel will have access to this information.
- Parental Involvement: While the SBHC aims to provide a convenient option for students to receive healthcare, we understand the critical importance of parental involvement. Parents/Guardians will be informed about any significant health-related matters, and their consent will be sought for medical evaluations and treatments. This also includes following guidance on the state of Michigan’s minor consent laws.
We believe that the School-Based Health Center would be a valuable addition to our school community, promoting the overall well-being of our students and ensuring they have access to the support they need to thrive academically and personally.
