Classroom Close-Up: Ms. Wesley, Thornton Creek

For this Classroom Close-Up we were invited to Ms. Wesley's 4th grade class at Thornton Creek Elementary School where all the 4th graders were celebrating the Festival of Cultures event.

Hi, my name is Nicole Wesley and I teach fourth grade here at Thornton Creek and today is an amazing day as it is our Festival of Cultures and I'm excited for you to come into our classroom for our close-up and you are going to see our Festival of Cultures with our heritage projects with students that are presenting their push and pull factors, they are seeing how we're connected to the world and each other and what's most amazing about this whole project is when we bring all the families in; grandparents, great-grandparents, family members and today we had them coming in working with them on this project is something that is very special because they'll have this memory forever. So come on in. Today's about the Festival of Cultures and the purpose is for everyone to choose what culture that they are related to in some way and they research about it from there like history to their family, there push and pull factors, they can do food and traditions and there's so many extra like extracurriculars you can do, you can bring in food, you can do the recipe cards, you can make a video and you can hand out, you can do handouts. I chose to do Polish art and and it's really important to do this because because if you don't learn about your culture, all the history of your family and all the history of your relatives can just disappear and it's gone forever. It was really special to represent my culture and have my family appreciate what I did. It's interesting so you can like learn the background of your friends and learn that even though you come from different places, you can all come together and fix your traditions because some people have like the same ingredients as you but like you're just have different name so I call your cultures kinda connect.
