Classroom Close-Up: Kindergarten, Ridge Wood

For this Classroom Close-Up we visited the kindergarten classes at Ridge Wood Elementary. All three classes created snowmen boards to give to their parents.

Hi! My name is Heather Zoldak and I'm Debbie LaLonde. And we're part of the Kindergarten team here at Ridge Wood Elementary School. And right now in Mrs. G's Kindergarten classroom we are working on a super secret project that the kindergarten students have been making for their parents as a special gift. Come on in and see what's happening. So the students have a piece of wood that was donated from Home Depot and they are decorating it to look like a snowman. Each piece of wood has been cut to the exact height of each student or close enough to the exact height. So it'll be a memorable souvenir to keep for years to come. A little snowman that's the same size as their kindergarten student. And how did it come together? Home Depot was contacted by one of our room parents and they donated the wood and actually cut the wood for us, we gave them the sizes, we measured the kids and gave them the sizes and then Sherwin-Williams in Northville donated the paint. Students painted the wood with some parent help and now you can see they're working with Mrs. G to put their hats on and create their faces. They're using their fingerprints to make the faces and put the nose on and then they have a place to put buttons down the front of it and there's a little tag that tells all about it. Okay so we put one sock on the top and we had a hot glue gun to glue a nose on with sparkles and we used finger paint to make dots to like whole to make face and eyes. He is as tall as like me. It's a surprise for my parents for when we made it at school and they can see it.

Home Depot donated and cut the boards to the exact size of each student. The paint was donated by Sherwin Williams.

A poem went along with the snowmen and it read: "Lean this snowman against the wall, to remind you when I was this small. My fingerprints made the mouth and eyes, this snowman is just my size! So take him out each year and see, I'm not as little as I used to be!"
