Amerman Elementary Hosts STEAM Career Day

Recently, Amerman Elementary School hosted a STEAM Career Day. The elementary STEAM teacher, Kim Chenoweth, came up with the idea and invited parents of Amerman Elementary to sign up to present if they had a STEAM-related job. Ms. Chenoweth said there was an overwhelming number of willing presenters. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math.

STEAM has been such a successful program here at the elementary schools, I was trying to think of a way for the kids to be able to connect what we're doing in the classroom to the real world. I've worked on Career days in the past in previous buildings and they've always been a success and I personally just love any opportunity where you can learn something new and learn from each other and so I decided to go out on a whim and reach out to parents of Amerman and we had an overwhelming response of parents who have careers in that relate to someway, shape, or form to the STEAM world. So we had some awesome presenters and it was just so cool to see the kids engaged in learning something new. So when I was asked to do STEAM career day I actually said yes right away, one it's an opportunity for me to share time with my daughter and she was super excited the whole way she even gave me pointers on you know what my presentation should look like but more importantly it was a chance to tell the electric vehicle story to the kids at a young age and to have them understand how important electric vehicles are to supporting our climate and also making a difference in the world and I honestly believe these will be the kids and the generation that will be driving electric vehicles when they choose a car in another five to seven years. It was kind of a fun experience because my dad he is kind of known worldwide kind of, countrywide maybe but it was kind of fun just having them explain what he does and why he does this and it was just fun listening to other parents and what they do and listen to how they got to that point. It's super fun to be at Amerman, I used to be a student here and now my girls are both students, so it's really exciting to come here and be back here again and talk to them and some of their friends about what I do. I like that how they talk about that they talk about a lot of different things like all of them are not the same and even though they're kind of similar, they also have a lot of differences too. I listened to Dr. Abby Wicks and she is a conservation biologist. And is was really cool because I want to be some sort of conservation scientist. When you think about that the careers that will be available to our kids in another, when they are actually graduating from college, they are all STEAM based and so it's extremely important that our kids are prepared for the future and that they have an opportunity to be able to grow and develop themselves and support their families long-term. I know it's crazy to think about fourth and fifth graders supporting families but one day they will have to and it will all be a STEAM-based society quite honestly. So kudos to the Northville team and to these teachers for having great students that are are supporting us. I just want to say it was exciting to be here and I hope we have a chance to do it again.
