Classroom Close-Up: Ms. Vertrees, Amerman

In this Classroom Close-Up, we visited Ms. Vertrees's 4th grade ALPS class at Amerman Elementary. The students are working on a math lesson that involves creating their own farm based on the region they were assigned. The goal is to make the most profit.

Hi Mrs. Rork, come on in! What's up Mrs. Rork! So these kiddos are working on what we're calling a farming project. They're farmers, they're going to do a little LARPing later on in the unit but if you walk around you're going to see that they're just working on really like a broad umbrella of math. We're doing things like percents and decimals and multiplication and what else guys, metric conversions, finding discounts and sale prices and most importantly some financial literacy. So take if you want to come take a look... So this is the farming project which the goal is to make the most profit on the off your farm. So we got planned up with the west region of the United States, every group has a region to use, so in our regions, this right here this is the crops that were growing. So when so with the crops, we're going to make profit out of it. So basically, Ms. Vertrees is giving us money as the government basically to make a farm and I use the profit that we make from it to give back to her with with with the seed money and the fencing money and she's also paying us to use no land which is the which is the brown part. This is like a math lesson to teach yourself about percentages, like so like so if we took one like so we have grapes which are the purple, if we took grapes up with 4% than all of our other crops would have less tinier percent, percentages of growing. So then every seed has can can be transferred into kilograms once you multiply it in in one square meter.
